It is an accepted understanding when selecting a caterer who specialises in intimate parties for around 50 people is not able to handle the catering requirements for 1000 plus people.
This does not boil-down to merely having the facilities and personnel to prepare for a thousand people. It goes much deeper into buying expertise plus a specific range of food-types together with the inherent preparation requirements.
The same can be said within the event planning industry. Planning a corporate conference for 500, bears limited resemblance to organising a series of association workshops or a product launch to a world-wide dealership. Certainly there are some organising tasks that run through all planning assignments however the required procedures and outcomes between one type of gathering and another could be as dissimilar as chalk is to cheese.
It is estimated that the MICE spend on business gatherings of one sort or another in South Africa amounts to many billion per annum. The amount wasted due to a lack of understanding as to the outcomes from the type of gathering can be staggering.
With buyers (end-users) insisting on more bang for their buck – and the corporate market being the largest sector of the MICE purchasing market – it makes sense that the call for planner standards by corporates is well overdue.
With this in mind – the Event Industry Standards 2015 emanating from the inaugural Event Industry Summit in 2014 – launched by Hackle Brooke – will draw the total industry into developing the Professional Planner Standards. Commencing in May, the participants will be at the cutting edge of a new era in the meetings/events industry.
