Last night, I attended one of Johannesburg’s premier networking events for professionals in the travel and tourism industry, hosted by Sandton Tourism. These events, held periodically, bring together buyers and sellers in the travel and tourism sector, so creating a platform for meaningful connections and business opportunities.
Diverse showcases and engaging interactions
The event featured a diverse array of exhibitors, each showcasing unique products and services related to travel and tourism. Among the highlights were a taxi service platform and a company specialising in African fashion and accessories. The latter particularly caught my attention, and I couldn’t resist purchasing a pair of beautiful earrings as a memento. These showcases not only offered insights into various aspects of the industry but also provided opportunities for attendees to indulge in some shopping and discover new trends.
The Onomo Hotel, where the event was hosted, impressed with its well-appointed rooms and comfortable amenities, making it an ideal choice for business travellers. The hotel’s management conducted a brief presentation, highlighting its features and services, which was followed by a tour of the property. The evening continued with drinks and snacks in a relaxed setting, allowing attendees to unwind and engage in further conversations.
The importance of networking
The key takeaway from the evening was the undeniable importance of networking in the travel and tourism industry. While having a perfect elevator pitch can be beneficial, the true essence of networking lies in genuine interactions and building lasting relationships. Reflecting on my initial experiences in the industry, I recalled feeling like a fish out of water, struggling to navigate the networking landscape. However, with practice and perseverance, I gradually became more comfortable and adept at networking.Β Networking events like the one hosted by Sandton Tourism provide invaluable opportunities to refine these skills. They offer a platform to meet industry peers, share insights, and explore potential collaborations. The experience emphasised that networking is not about perfection but about authentic engagement and continuous improvement.
The Sandton Tourism networking event was a testament to the value of connecting with industry professionals in a structured yet relaxed environment. Such events are essential for fostering relationships, discovering new opportunities, and staying updated with industry trends. As the travel and tourism sector continues to evolve, the importance of networking cannot be overstated. It is through these interactions that we learn, grow, and contribute to the industry’s collective success. I look forward to attending future events and continuing to build meaningful connections in this dynamic field.
