SACIA analyses live events, technical production industry impact | The Planner

This past year, efforts around one of the Southern African Communications Industries Association’s (SACIA) focus areas have culminated in a comprehensive study on the size, scope, and economic impact of the live events and technical production (LETPS) industry in South Africa.

“It’s been a difficult challenge, not least because of the multi-faceted nature of the technical production industry, which covers everything from corporate, entertainment and sporting events to exhibitions, festivals, cultural events and political rallies,” notes Kevan Jones, Executive Director of SACIA.

Tapping into various industry-led surveys and recent reports, including those from the South African Cultural Observatory (SACO), the association’s study shows the LETPS industry’s contribution to employment and economic growth. The analysis also highlights “its diverse range of activities, the prevalence of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMMEs) and freelance work, and its vulnerability to economic shocks and infrastructural challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and loadshedding”.
