At ExpoGuys, we believe that the strength of our business lies not only in the services we deliver but also in the people who bring them to life. After recently celebrating Global Exhibitions Day 2025, we’re proud to highlight two of our own who have shaped – and continue to shape – the exhibition industry with their dedication, creativity, and expertise.
With over 97 years of combined experience between them, John Webb, CEO ExpoGuys, and Nicholas De Klerk, Creative Director, have seen the industry evolve from handmade models to high-tech innovation, from simple booths to immersive brand experiences. Their stories reflect a shared passion for the craft, a relentless drive for excellence, and a commitment to nurturing the next generation of exhibition professionals.
John Webb: Building a Legacy of Excellence in the Exhibition Industry
For John Webb, a career in exhibitions was less a planned destination and more a fortunate discovery. “I found my way into the industry more by chance than intention,” he says. Together with his partner at the time, John identified a gap in the exhibition sector’s electrical needs, and never looked back. “Once the exhibition bug bites, there’s simply no letting go.”
Over 47 years later, John’s passion is undiminished. “The thrill of seeing an empty space transformed into something extraordinary never fades. And we get to recreate it again and again.”
A Career Built on Transformation
John reflects on the early thrill of discovering how lighting could completely change the feel of a stand. Over time, technological advancements have transformed how exhibitions are planned and executed. “It’s almost unrecognisable compared to when I first began,” he says, recalling a time when 3D models were built by hand and communication relied on landlines and fax machines.
Yet, even amid rapid changes, John believes that strong client relationships and human connection remain at the heart of the industry. “At ExpoGuys, we take immense pride in fostering client relationships built on trust and service excellence.”
Passing on Knowledge
John leads by example, maintaining close ties with the entire ExpoGuys team. “I hope to share my expertise not by instruction but by working alongside the team.” Many team members have grown into seasoned professionals under his watchful eye, something John considers a legacy worth cherishing.
Advice for Newcomers
His advice to those entering the exhibition world? “This industry isn’t for the faint-hearted, the hours are long and the demands are intense. But as long as you deliver on your promises, opportunities will come your way.”
Looking Ahead
Despite the pressures, John wouldn’t change a thing. “I love the exhibition industry and would not choose to work in any other environment.”
Nicholas De Klerk: A Lifetime of Passion and Creativity in Design
For Nicholas De Klerk, the spark was lit at just 13 years old, at an agricultural show in George. “I can still visualise the stand and taste the pineapple juice they handed out,” he recalls with a smile. That early encounter with professional exhibition design planted a seed that would grow into a five-decade-long career.
Memorable Moments
Nicholas’ journey has been one of endless memorable moments. From winning a Best Stand Award with his first design to creating the renowned “Beautiful Things” exhibition for the World Summit on Sustainable Development, his career has been marked by creativity and innovation.
He recalls designing the South African Ekhaya Hospitality Centre for the 2012 Olympics and the South African stand at COP24 in Poland, learning lessons in precision and craftsmanship along the way. “Experiencing that build-up is something I will never forget.”
Adapting to Change
Having witnessed the industry’s evolution first-hand, Nicholas describes it as “chalk and cheese.” From hand-cut vinyl logos to digital printing and 3D rendering, from faxes to emails, the changes have been vast. Yet he remains cautious about AI’s impact on the design process, warning that it risks diluting originality. “Design thrives on thought, inspiration, and interpretation, not just data.”
Balancing Art and Execution
Nicholas approaches design with practicality in mind. “It’s a designer’s job to be creative while mentally solving the ‘how’ with every line you draw.” At ExpoGuys, he’s known for challenging norms, whether repurposing office water bottles for display cases or reimagining the use of system components.
Mentorship Through Passion
Nicholas shares his expertise through constant engagement with the younger design team. “I’m forever irritating them with suggestions, but I hope my experience and ideas are appreciated.”
Advice for Newcomers
His advice: “Be original, don’t be scared, have a sense of humour, and be prepared for long hours.”
Looking to the Future
As for what he would have done differently? “Maybe advertising or being an installation artist, but I’m happy where I am.” Even now, Nicholas dreams of incorporating drones into a stand design. Proof that, after 50 years, his creative spirit remains as lively as ever.
Celebrating a Legacy
As Global Exhibitions Day reminds us of the impact exhibitions have worldwide, it’s pioneers like John Webb and Nicholas De Klerk who inspire the industry to keep pushing boundaries. Through decades of innovation, leadership, and mentorship, they have helped shape the exhibitions landscape in South Africa and beyond. Proof that experience and passion never go out of style.
