LEADING WITH PURPOSE | The Planner

In the latest edition of Meetings, we sit down with T. Taubie Motlhabane, chief executive officer of the Cape Town International Convention Centre, to unpack the CTICC’s strategic direction, its leadership in sustainability and legacy impact, and how the centre continues to position Cape Town — and Africa — as a powerful force in the global MICE landscape.

As one of Africa’s premier business events venues, the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the continent’s global meetings and exhibitions landscape. Under the leadership of CEO T. Taubie
Motlhabane, the CTICC is not only strengthening its position as a world-class convention centre but also driving innovation, sustainability, and meaningful economic impact.

A VISION FOR CONTINUED GROWTH
Since stepping into the role of CEO, how would you describe the current phase of the CTICC’s evolution?
The CTICC has reached an exciting stage in its development. We are building on a strong foundation while continuing to strengthen our position as one of Africa’s leading convention centres. Over the past two decades, the centre has established itself as a key platform for global business events on the continent. Our focus now is on reinforcing that position while ensuring we continue to create value for Cape Town and South Africa. This includes maintaining operational excellence, investing in infrastructure, technology and sustainability, and strengthening partnerships across the tourism and business events industry. Equally important is ensuring that the CTICC continues to generate meaningful economic and social value by connecting global industries with African markets, knowledge communities and opportunities.

POSITIONING SOUTH AFRICA GLOBALLY
How do you see the CTICC’s role evolving within the international MICE landscape?
Convention centres today play a far broader role than simply hosting events. They act as platforms that connect industries, facilitate knowledge exchange and enable global collaboration. At the CTICC, we contribute by attracting international conferences and exhibitions that bring global professionals, researchers and decision-makers to Cape Town. These gatherings create opportunities for dialogue, innovation and sector development. Our work is closely aligned with a wide network of industry partners. Through collaboration with tourism authorities, government and industry stakeholders, we help position Cape Town as a competitive global destination while ensuring the benefits of business tourism extend across the local economy.

INNOVATION THAT ENHANCES EXPERIENCE
What recent developments at the CTICC should the industry be aware of?
A key focus has been ensuring the CTICC evolves in line with the operational and technological requirements of modern events. One of the most significant upgrades has been the enhancement of Wi-Fi and wired network infrastructure in CTICC 2, particularly within the Upper Halls, strengthening connectivity for large-scale events. We have also introduced hearing aid loop systems in CTICC 1 auditoriums, improving accessibility and ensuring a more inclusive experience for delegates. Alongside these developments, we continue to invest in digital infrastructure, venue systems and building technologies that support efficient event delivery while enhancing the overall delegate experience.

DESIGNING FOR MODERN EVENTS
How is the CTICC adapting to changing delegate expectations?
Modern events demand flexibility, and the CTICC was purpose-built to support a wide spectrum of event formats. Spanning over 140,000 square metres across two interconnected buildings, the venue includes exhibition halls, auditoriums, a ballroom and adaptable meeting spaces. Event organisers work closely with our team to design experiences that align with their objectives, supported by in-house catering and operational expertise. We are also supported by a strong network of preferred service providers, including specialists in audio-visual production, logistics and technical services, ensuring that even complex events are delivered efficiently and to the highest standards.

EMBEDDING SUSTAINABILITY AT EVERY LEVEL
How has sustainability been integrated into CTICC operations?
Sustainability is embedded in how the CTICC operates and delivers events. Our approach aligns with global frameworks, including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and supports the industry’s transition towards Net Zero. Waste management is a key priority. In our most recent reporting period, 57% of waste was diverted from landfill through recycling and reuse initiatives. Materials such as event branding are also repurposed through community upcycling programmes. Energy efficiency is another focus area, with LED lighting, solar solutions and heat pumps implemented across the venue, supported by building management systems that optimise energy use. By integrating these initiatives into daily operations, sustainability becomes part of how the CTICC functions, rather than a standalone programme.

CREATING LASTING IMPACT
How do you ensure events leave a meaningful legacy?
Business events generate value that extends far beyond the venue. They stimulate tourism, support local industries and create opportunities for knowledge exchange. In the most recent reporting period, the CTICC hosted 330 events, welcomed over 300,000 visitors and generated approximately R8.7 billion in economic impact nationally. Beyond economic impact, we focus on social value. Initiatives such as the Youth in Action Expo connect young people with education and employment opportunities, while programmes like the CTICC Care Drive support vulnerable communities.

TECHNOLOGY DRIVING THE FUTURE OF EVENTS
What role is technology playing at the CTICC?
Technology is central to how events are designed and delivered. We have focused on strengthening digital infrastructure while investing in systems that improve operational efficiency. This includes ongoing enhancements to connectivity, building management systems and digital signage, enabling more efficient monitoring and control of venue operations. We are also exploring emerging technologies such as RFID for asset tracking and AI integration within surveillance systems, forming part of a broader digital transformation strategy.

THE POWER OF PARTNERSHIPS
How important are partnerships to the CTICC’s success?
Partnerships are fundamental. We work closely with stakeholders across government, tourism bodies, convention bureaux and industry partners to position Cape Town as a leading destination. These collaborations support international bidding, destination marketing and the delivery of major events, while operational partnerships ensure seamless event execution. Together, these relationships create a strong and coordinated ecosystem that supports the success of the business events industry.

PEOPLE AT THE HEART OF EXCELLENCE
How do you cultivate a high-performing team?
Our people are at the heart of everything we do. Delivering world-class events depends on collaboration, professionalism and dedication. We prioritise creating an environment where employees feel supported and empowered. Investment in skills development is key — in the past financial year alone, R3.1 million was invested in staff training. By encouraging continuous learning and recognising achievement, we build a culture of excellence that translates directly into client experience.

RESILIENCE IN A CHANGING INDUSTRY
What lessons has the CTICC taken from recent industry challenges?
Resilience comes from adaptability and strong organisational foundations. One key lesson has been the importance of maintaining a diversified event portfolio, allowing us to respond to shifts in demand across different market segments. Strong governance and risk management have also been critical, enabling informed decision-making in uncertain environments. These approaches have resulted in record performance, demonstrating both organisational resilience and continued global confidence in Cape Town as a business events destination.

AFRICA’S RISING GLOBAL INFLUENCE
What role does Africa play in the global business events landscape?
Africa’s role continues to grow as global industries recognise the value of engaging with the continent. At the CTICC, we support this by hosting international events that bring global expertise to the region. Events such as the International Astronomical Union General Assembly and the Africa Food Show demonstrate how business events can connect global industries with African markets. These platforms position Cape Town — and Africa — as credible and competitive hubs for international collaboration.

LOOKING AHEAD
What does the future hold for the CTICC?
Our ambition is to continue strengthening our role as one of Africa’s leading convention centres while ensuring that the events we host create lasting value. We currently have 389 confirmed events scheduled through to 2031, representing a projected value of approximately R1.45 billion — a clear indication of continued confidence in the destination. Success will ultimately be measured not only by the number of events we host, but by the impact they create — through economic growth, knowledge exchange and global collaboration.
