The CSIR International Convention Centre (CSIR ICC) has taken its commitment to capacity development to new heights by welcoming its largest-ever single intake of hospitality students. Since 2001, the CSIR ICC has supported capacity development by annually appointing in-service trainees pursuing diplomas in food and beverage services, hospitality management, or other industry-related qualifications.
Nine students joined the CSIR ICC in February 2026 to participate in a six-month workplace training programme, which will conclude in July 2026.
During their six months of training, the students gain valuable experience in several key areas. They participated in conference preparations, various cooking methods, and developed a well-rounded understanding of culinary techniques. They assist senior chefs during meal service, gaining hands-on experience in plating and maintaining hygiene standards. In addition, they learn about planning, timing, and presentation for a large-scale event, gaining insights into space arrangement, service flow, and bespoke customer experience management.
The students participating in the programme are Temogo Matsimela, Grace Tshimangadzo Mahlakula, Gladys Lindiwe Masango, Mahlatse Rakhuduga, Reneilwe Mohafe, Mmabalemetsi Maphoto, Reneiloe Chuma, Ofentse Makhubela and Masego Mosime.
Reflecting on her experience, student Gladys Lindiwe Masango said: “My time at the CSIR ICC has been rewarding, and I’ve learned valuable skills in banqueting, mise en place, teamwork and food safety. I look forward to gaining more experience and continuing to grow as a chef.”
Fellow student Reneilwe Chuma added: “My time at the CSIR ICC has been a valuable learning experience. I’ve developed my cooking skills, learned to work under pressure and gained confidence in the kitchen. I look forward to learning more techniques and continuing to grow as a chef.”
Bronwen Cadle de Ponte, CSIR ICC General Manager, says, “Our students are encouraged to focus on the essential skills, take risks and learn from their mistakes, because the training is meant to empower them and help them reach their potential. The ICC is a safe place where they are at ease to enjoy their own personal growth and unlock their own strength. A student with some amount of work experience has a better chance of securing a job than one with no work experience. Therefore, we aim to give as many students as possible the opportunity to gain experience in our multifaceted operation
