Irene Country Hotel opens a new chapter with Tulip | The Planner

A new lakeside venue, refreshed accommodation and an elevated dining experience are strengthening Irene Country Hotel’s position as a distinctive Gauteng destination for meetings, events and memorable gatherings.

There is something special about a venue that manages to make you feel as though you have escaped the city without actually having to travel very far from it.

That sense of arrival was very much part of the experience when 4Mal Media’s Antois-Leigh Nepgen and Shante Viljoen attended the recent launch of Tulip at Irene Country Hotel – an event that marked an important new chapter for the well-established Gauteng property.

Officially launched on 30 September 2026, Tulip is Irene Country Hotel’s newest lakeside events venue, designed to accommodate larger gatherings while remaining connected to the natural setting and countryside character that have long defined the property.

For the meetings and events industry, however, the launch represented much more than the unveiling of another function room. It showcased how the property is evolving its offering for a market increasingly looking for venues that can combine flexibility, experience, convenience and a strong sense of place.

A venue designed around possibility

Tulip immediately adds considerable scale to Irene Country Hotel’s event offering.

The new venue can accommodate up to 450 seated guests, with a main event space measuring approximately 32.2m by 19.5m with a 4.2m height. Its lakeside position in Irene, Centurion places it conveniently between Johannesburg and Pretoria while giving delegates and guests a distinctly removed-from-the-city experience.

That balance is likely to be one of Tulip’s strongest advantages for planners.

A large-capacity venue needs to do more than accommodate numbers, and the thinking behind Tulip appears to have focused strongly on adaptability. The venue has been designed for conferences, launches, gala dinners, exhibitions, weddings and celebrations, allowing event professionals to reinterpret the space depending on the format and audience.

Modern audiovisual capability and three-phase power have also been incorporated to support presentations, entertainment and event production – an increasingly important consideration when planners are evaluating venues for complex corporate events and high-production experiences.

The main venue connects with a preassembly area and terrace, allowing the guest journey to flow naturally from arrival through to the main event. Tailored catering can then be developed around the occasion, guest profile and programme.

It is this combination of functionality and setting that stood out at the launch. Tulip feels intentionally connected to its surroundings rather than separated from them, with the lakeside environment forming part of the experience.

More than four walls

For event planners, the appeal of a venue rarely stops at the doors of the function space.

Increasingly, clients are looking for destinations where accommodation, dining, networking, wellness and the event itself can coexist without complicated transfers or fragmented logistics.

That is where Irene Country Hotel’s broader transformation becomes particularly relevant.

Established in 1998, the five-star TGCSA-graded property has grown into a 170-room countryside hotel with conferencing and event facilities, lakeside dining and access to neighbouring experiences including Camdeboo Day Spa and Irene Farm.

The opening of Tulip forms part of a larger refresh across the property.

All 170 guest rooms have been updated, drawing inspiration from the character of a traditional countryside manor. Warm, earthy fabrics and contemporary finishes have been introduced with the intention of retaining the hotel’s connection to its heritage while creating an environment suitable for leisure guests as well as corporate and business travellers.

For organisers considering conferences, incentives or multi-day corporate programmes, this gives the venue the ability to extend an event beyond the meeting room and create a more complete delegate experience.

A new lakeside dining experience

The transformation has also introduced Lake House Restaurant, overlooking the water and combining polished interiors with a relaxed countryside atmosphere.

Alongside the restaurant is the Lake House Lounge, offering a more informal environment in which guests can meet, have a drink or simply enjoy the surroundings. Together, the spaces have been positioned as a new social and culinary heart for the hotel.

For business events, spaces such as these play an increasingly important role.

Some of the most valuable conversations at a conference happen outside the formal programme: over breakfast, during an informal drink after the day’s sessions or while delegates are simply spending time together. Having those environments within the same destination gives organisers opportunities to create a programme that feels less segmented and more experiential.

Countryside character, city convenience

Perhaps Irene Country Hotel’s strongest proposition remains the contrast it offers.

There is greenery, water, a working farm environment and an unmistakably countryside feel – yet the property remains within Gauteng’s major economic hub.

The hotel describes its destination experience as one that brings together accommodation, spa experiences, dining, farm activities, weddings, conferencing and events.

For the business events sector, that mix opens the door to considerably more than traditional conferencing.

Executive retreats can incorporate wellness. Incentive programmes can combine meetings with leisure experiences. Conferences can transition into lakeside dinners. Corporate celebrations can be staged as destination experiences rather than single-evening functions.

And with Tulip now adding a substantial new large-format space to the mix, Irene Country Hotel has strengthened its ability to host events across a wider range of formats and guest numbers.

A new stage for Gauteng events

Walking through the property during the launch, what came through most strongly was that Irene Country Hotel has not tried to reinvent the destination by abandoning what people already know about it.

Instead, the latest developments build on that identity.

The countryside remains.

The lake remains.

The sense of escape remains.

What has changed is the scale and versatility of what planners can now create within that setting.

For the 4Mal Media team, attending the launch offered an opportunity to experience that evolution first-hand and to see how Tulip could translate into the types of conferences, launches, gala dinners, corporate celebrations and incentive programmes our industry is continually being challenged to reimagine.

For planners searching for a Gauteng venue that combines accessibility with a genuine destination feel, Tulip gives Irene Country Hotel another compelling reason to be on the site-inspection list.

Tulip is now open for bookings, with Irene Country Hotel also welcoming event enquiries and site visits.
