In line with the call for all South Africans to devote 67 minutes of their time to a worthy cause on Mandela Day, 1time Airline participated in a community building initiative fondly know by 1time as Build a Shacky with Blacky in Diepsloot, Gauteng on 18 July 2012.
Twenty five eager employees from the low cost carrier got their hands dirty as they buckled down in assisting 1time CEO Blacky Komani to construct ten low cost houses for Diepsloot residents. The initiative was undertaken in conjunction with tourism group, Tourvest.
Komani notes that 1time endorsed the project owing to its desire to affect sustainable change for communities.
1time maintains that our success as an airline is not solely determined by our commitment to our day to day service offerings, but by our Ubuntu spirit which enables us to construct a lasting change for wider society. We are therefore driven by the imperative to improve the lives of people in need, especially those who live in impoverished circumstances.
The meaningful outing started off at 7am where participants met up and were split into teams. Filled with enthusiasm and amity, everyone was transported to Diepsloot where the building began.
The significance of Mandela Day presented the perfect opportunity for us to play our part in ensuring that community members of Diepsloot not only have better living conditions, but are provided with a sounder base to develop from, in both an economic and social sense, says Komani.
Komani has been personally involved in this initiative for some time, having participated in it during his employment at Tourvest.
He concludes that 1time plans to initiate similar CSI initiatives in future.
1time understands that there is an ongoing need to implement initiatives which uplift people who require assistance. We therefore plan to partner in numerous other CSI projects moving forward, which will ultimately help create a more prosperous future for South African citizens.
