Skill creation goes global | The Planner

An Academy with a true mission for the future can best describe the UK’s National Skills Academy who have spread their wings and can call themselves truly global. Playing its part in the growth of the global creative and cultural economy, Creative & Cultural Skills continues to develop new sector projects and partnerships with key nations, throughout the world. India, Colombia & China are the growth areas for the Creative & Cultural Skills. South Africa’s SA Roadies (SARA) are amongst the Academy’s achievements – headed by stalwart Freddie Nyathela – SARA can only go
from strength to strength.

Brazil
Following a successful trip to Brazil in December 2012, Creative & Cultural Skills invited Brazilian
delegates to the UK in March 2013 to attend its annual industry conference. The group was able to share ideas with leading executives from UK arts and cultural organisations and some of our founder colleges to further develop
the Creative Training Initiative, an exchange programme led by Creative & Cultural Skills for teaching industry practitioners to teach students in the sector. The visitors also travelled to Cardiff on behalf of British Council Wales to meet arts organisations and education partners, as well as London-based partners, including Arts Council England, the British Council, Battersea Arts Centre and Jerwood Trust.

South Africa
Founders of the South African Roadies Association (SARA) made a special visit to the UK to see The
Backstage Centre in operation at the Academy’s annual Conference. SARA was founded by its current President,
Freddie Nyathela in 1992 to help provide employment and technical training for young people in search of a career in South Africa. Already providing training and career development at a level that would be the envy of any European or American technical industry, SARA plans to bring a cohort of its students for training at The Backstage Centre in 2014.
