The Entertainment Centre at Sun City was first opened 35 years ago.
At the time, the Entertainment Centre housed the first casino accessible to South Africans.
As of 11 January 2016 the doors have been closed to make way for the reimagined version of itself, which promises to be “an experiential entertainment experience” according to Chief Operating Officer, Rob Collins. Once the R300 million upgrade is complete, more experiences such as laser tag and ten pin bowling will be added to the offering.
The Conference Centre, which was impressive in its heyday, had become dated and lacked in size and technology, losing its competitive edge. A temporary structure, called Sun Sky Village was built in just over 3 months at a cost of R68 million to replace the Conference Centre. This structure is planned to be operational for 11 months (until 20 November) which is enough time to cover the conferences booked for the calendar year, while the new Conference Centre is being built. Conference occupancy for the year already stands at 78%.
The Sun Sky Village which has already been operational for 3 weeks, holds 4000 people comfortably is impressive and boasts full Wi-Fi coverage, R3.9 million state of the art fibre optics and cabling, induction heating, LED screens, built-in bar, UPS back up power supply and a backup generator.
An option is to repurpose some of the structure and fittings for big events such as the Nedbank Golf Challenge, once the larger, optimized Convention Centre is built on the upper level of the new Entertainment Centre. The catering facilities at Sun City have been Halaal certified for over a year now. Part of the upgrade includes the build of a Kosher kitchen too.
The Sun Park has been built as a replacement for the Superbowl. A versatile, semi-permanent building that can be adjusted to cater to the specific event, whether the need calls for an indoor venue or an outdoor space. Even though R5 million has been spent on sound, lighting and stage no international acts have been booked for the year.
The Sun City Resort is currently undergoing a R800 million refurbishment. Visitors can be assured that once renovations are complete you’ll have every entertainment need, want and desire under one roof and a stones throw from your hotel. Still your one stop entertainment resort – everything you love and know but with a modern, current and lively attitude.
