The Planner spoke to Mike Lysko, CEO of Flock Eventing Platform, about what he thinks could be the biggest technological game changer yet – quantum computing.
“From event apps and webinars to cashless pay points and 3D printers – technology is already changing the face of events as we know them,” says Mike. “Now, quantum computing is set to transform corporate events in ways we can only imagine.”

In case you are wondering what that is (as were we), Mike explains; “The mechanics of quantum computing rely on tiny particles called qubits. Qubits are atoms that are suspended in extreme cold (think thousands of degrees below Celsius, a similar temperature to outer space). This, as opposed to traditional computers that rely on electrical circuits. Why is this important? Because the mechanics of quantum computers allow for exponential jumps in computing power – revolutionising computing, and life, as we know it.”
Essentially this means that computing power will be increased dramatically. Where our current computers are not able to solve problems of a certain size and complexity, quantum computing will be able to. This will subsequently enable all current technological developments to advance in a dramatic leap.
“We’re talking about finding cures for major diseases, increasing our life expectancy into the hundreds of years, and everything in between,” adds Mike.
According to Google’s Research Lab, we will start to experience these benefits from as early as 2030.
What does this mean for the events industry? “Because the possibilities are literally endless, it’s hard to fathom exactly what living in a world that has quantum computing power at its disposal will look like,” says Mike. However he speculates that corporate events will be impacted by the following four outcomes:
1. Technology will become embedded into events
The potential for technology to improve event experiences will be less theoretical and more affordable – which will see an increase in its use. For example, wearable tech like Augmented Reality (AR) glasses could dramatically enhance networking and presentations.
2. Physical spaces for events will be optional
As the technology for Virtual Realities (VR) improve and become more life-like, virtual events are likely to gain traction – especially on a global scale where travel time, costs and jet lag can be seen as an unnecessary inconvenience, and more effort and emphasis will be placed on reducing the carbon footprint of an event.
3. Better engagement
Even for those guests who are virtually attending an event, their experiences will be enhanced thanks to the impact of quantum computing. “Guests will be able to hologram themselves onto stage next to their favourite keynote speaker, test out simulations of products that are yet to be manufactured, and play with virtual prototypes – all perks usually reserved for VIPS. Events will become fully immersive, in a way that’s convenient and accessible for every single attendee,” adds Mike.
4. Easier than ever
Facial recognition software will enable guests to register and pay for events in seconds – and perhaps as simply as smiling at a camera. These kinds of seamless experiences will improve everyone’s experience of an event. Queues and delays will become things only grandparents talk about.
