For the first time, Strauss & Co is presenting an online only art and fine wine auction. Bidding is currently open on Straussart.co.za until 8pm on Monday 16 March 2020, where 80 lots are available, featuring a mix of artwork by top South African artists, sought-after South African and French wines, and a tasteful selection of collectables such as silver, glassware, ceramics and furniture.
Marlene Dumas, William Kentridge, Walter Battiss. Robert Hodgins, Claudette Schreuders and Simon Stone are just some of the artists whose work will be available, in the form of paintings, works on paper and prints.
The wine collections will represent the Burgundy and Champagne regions of France. Roland Peens, Director of Wine Cellar fine wine merchants and Strauss & Co wine auction partner, says, “Burgundy wines have surged in demand world-wide recently, as collectors hone in on the most hallowed producers and vineyards. Mature bottles are ever more rare and the Strauss & Co online sale offers the most special Chardonnay in the world, Le Montrachet, as well as one of the most special Pinot Noir vineyards, Bonne-Mares. Burgundy is the home of Pinot and Chardonnay, a historical and very special region in east-central France. Many believe the elegant dry white and red wines from Burgundy are the pinnacle of wine.”
Mature Grand Marque Champagnes are on offer, as well as from the likes of Salon, Dom Perignon, Drappier and Laurent Perrier are on offer. Rare Burgundies back to the 1990s include fine bottles from George Roumier, Coche-Dury, Joseph Drouhin, Rene Engel and Comte de Vogue.
South Africa has a strong heritage of producing quality Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines, but, because of its limited areas of production, very little mature wine is available. Fortunately, Strauss & Co has been able to secure stock from the top producers including Hamilton Russell Vineyards, Crystallum, Kershaw, Lismore, Meerlust, Newton Johnson, Paul Cluver, Storm Wines and Restless River.
The online format offers the benefit of relaxed browsing and careful consideration, and using a simple bidding process. After registering on the website, bidders will receive confirmations and updates via email and sms. This means you can bid from anywhere, and at anytime, for your convenience.
