After running aground on 25 July 2020, the MV Wakashio bulk carrier leaked an estimated 1 000 tonnes of oil into the ocean in what some scientists call Mauritius’ worst environmental disaster ever.
Cleaning and decontamination efforts are being assisted by 22 international experts as well as the community.
Major clean-up operations around the affected lagoons and shores in the south eastern region of the island have been ongoing, alongside the containment and extraction of the remaining 3 000 tonnes of hydrocarbon fuel aboard the carrier that eventually broke in two this past Saturday (15 August).
While the last of the remaining 50 cubic metres of hydrocarbon was expected to be pumped out by 16 August, cleaning and decontamination efforts are being assisted by 22 international experts as well as the community.
