Staging industry reflects on the best of the best | The Planner

There are few MICE gatherings that do not require some form of audio visual assistance. Getting the message across in order to meet the events objectives is paramount each and ever time.

Enter one Stephen Collins – internationally recognised – with the magic touch of set design that is virtually unsurpassed in the mammoth staging production world. Whether the latest model motor car launch – with the vehicle suspended vertically or the 2010 Soccer World Cup’s goosebump ceremonies – we can all recall the moments of sheer pleasure and delight – not realising the talent, expertise and frustrations ‘back-of-house’ that made it happen over many months of preparation.

Most of us know of the major staging & production companies – few have heard of the unsung experts that do more than just lurk in the shadows.

Stephen Collins died suddenly last week and well over 100 staging folk gathered at the Theatre on the Track in Kyalami this week to remember a fine, highly talented individual. In the words of Gearhouse’ Head Honcho Ofer Lapid “He was the rabbi – we were the congregation.”

It may be quite a while before the technical MICE industry surpasses Collin’s outstanding talent.
