Landmark hotel celebrates twenty years in the business.
Twenty years ago this month, the landscape of Johannesburg’s Oxford Road was changed forever. The Hyatt Regency Johannesburg hotel opened for business in the summer of 1995 as the Park Hyatt Johannesburg before being rebranded to the Hyatt Regency in 2007.
Introducing Southern Africa to the signature service and quality associated with the Hyatt brand and making it the second Hyatt on the African continent. Hyatt Regency Johannesburg first opened its doors on November 27, 1995 in Rosebank, a leading suburb in Johannesburg. Centrally located between Johannesburg CBD and Sandton, Hyatt Regency Johannesburg has long been known as the ‘place to meet’ in the hustle and bustle city of Johannesburg.
A R80-million renovation in 2013 kept the hotel’s aesthetic modern and fresh with updated public spaces décor and services, including the one nine one restaurant with its open show-kitchen and The Terrace – Cigar and Wine bar located in the hotel’s lush gardens.
“I am proud and humbled to be involved in Hyatt Regency Johannesburg’s 20th birthday. Little did I know when I started out as Director of Rooms in 1995 that I would return to celebrate this great milestone” says Michael McBain, Hyatt Regency Johannesburg’s General Manager.
“In architecture, interior design, food and beverage, facilities and amenities, the hotel has always been dedicated to providing the highest level of guest comfort and experience, from the famed atrium ceiling that dominated the hotel’s lobby to the new innovative event space and signature one nine one restaurant, the hotel has played a major role in the development of the South African hospitality industry.”
