The Madikwe Reserve comprises 720 square km and is home to some 27 major indigenous animal species, including wild dog, cheetah, lion, rhino, buffalo and elephant, thanks to the biggest government-sponsored game relocation programme in Africa commencing in 1991, and aptly titled Operation Phoenix after the mythical bird that burnt itself and then rose again from the ashes. A summer two-day bird watching safari could result in between 190 and 210 bird species out of the known 313 species recorded here to date.
General game species totalling over 6,000 animals have also been re-introduced to the Reserve to complement the needs of the ever-increasing predator population. Cheetah is included in the current re-introduction programme.
This adds to the natural carnival of animals that can be viewed on safari game drives as well as from the Tau hospitality deck and most room decks overlooking the waterhole at the lodge.
The 5-star facilities and air-conditioned accommodation at Tau have been refurbished and re-decorated to meet the demands of regular as well as new local and international visitors, with 20 standard chalets, 6 deluxe chalets, 1 family unit as well as 1 family suite, complete with a decadent dinosaur egg bath overlooking the waterhole from the main-en-suite.
