Green is here to stay | The Planner

It’s great to see more and more people, especially big corporates and organisations jumping on the green band wagon. People who know a thing or two about going green are undoubtedly those at The Event Greening Forum (EGF).

The EGF would like to commend six of its members for winning various green awards for activities and projects they were involved in during 2012.
Justin Hawes, EGF Chairman, says: Awards and recognition play an important part in the process of encouraging companies to make the changes to become more sustainable. We are proud to see that so many of our members are, not only actively promoting sustainable practices, but doing such a great job of it that they are being recognised with green awards. On the behalf of the EGF, I would like to congratulate them for their successful efforts.

The EGF is a non-profit entity that seeks to promote sustainable practices within the local events industry, with an initial focus on business events like exhibitions, conferences and meetings. This aim is achieved, in part, through working with associations and member companies who are active in the events sector.
FEDHASA (Federated Hospitality Association of Southern Africa) and EXSA (Exhibition and Events Association of Southern Africa) have been promoting the concept of sustainable development to the industry for some time, and both became founding members of the EGF when it was officially launched in 2011.
The Imvelo Awards for Responsible Tourism is the flagship project of FEDHASA, and was launched the in 2002. The Awards aim to reward tourism and hospitality businesses for real, measurable and sustained contributions to Responsible Tourism. The Awards are in line with the key outcomes of the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg and now operates in line with the strategic vision of the National Department of Tourisms National Tourism Sector Strategy (NTSS).
The EXSA Green Awards for exhibitions and exhibition stands were introduced in 2012, as the first awards of their kind that specifically addresses greening within the local exhibition industry.
EXSA, FEDHASA and the Event Greening Forum all promote the principles of the triple P bottom line for sustainable growth People, Planet and Prosperity (as outlined in the international Kings 111 report).
