Outshine the rest | The Planner

What to outshine the competition or dine like a diplomat? Yes, than School of Etiquette is for you.

The South African School of Etiquette tutors report positive feedback from course attendees over the last few months and CEO Courtenay Carey feels heartened at the enthusiasm and vigour with which students are responding during our courses. “I knew there was a need for polishing our youngsters as well as adults wanting to achieve success in their lives as students, new employees and even managers wanting to reach their true potential but did not realise how fast our courses would be filling up,” she states.

“Dine like a Diplomat and Outshine the Competition courses have proved particularly popular, which indicates that South Africans are keen to brush up on their etiquette and refuse to be left behind in the global drive for success,” she enthuses.

Says a course member recently attending the Finishing School for Adults course: “I decided to attend the course to prove that I actually was well polished; much to my shock, I was not even half-way there! I’ve applied some of my newly acquired social skills and am already noticing a tangible difference in how my colleagues are reacting to my ‘added’ charm. I look forward to attending How to be a Gentleman – I know my mother and girlfriend will be impressed.

Says Courtenay: “Shakespeare said, ‘All the world’s a stage…’ – and he was right as you are always on show and your soft skills define you. To have the self-confidence to know you are in control and doing the right thing gives you the power to showcase authenticity and refinement. Competitors may have the same technical knowledge; you can have that additional competitive edge, the ‘X’ factor, through your social skills.”

According to a study done by Dress for Success guru John Malloy, 99% of executives said that social skills were prerequisites for succeeding in business and social life.

Eating is not an executive skill… but it is especially hard to imagine why anyone negotiating a rise to the top would consider it possible to skip mastering these very simple requirements… what else did they skip? – Fortune 500 CEO

About
The School of Etiquette was launched in Johannesburg in May 2013 by mother and daughter team Sharon and Courtenay Carey after much research was conducted by them in South Africa and abroad. Says Sharon: “We teach individuals the social and people skills to interact comfortably and confidently in any social or business environment. There’s a misconception that etiquette is all about good manners and how to eat correctly. While this is certainly a part of it, there is so much more to becoming socially smart.”

Courtenay believes individuals need to be taught correct social behavioural skills so as to become self-aware, respect themselves and thereby treating others with respect, understanding and cordiality. Social skills are not a luxury but a necessity to achieve success in today’s world.

She went on to attend the Protocol School of Washington to emerge as an International Protocol and Etiquette Consultant, followed by her completing a course at the New York School of Etiquette in Social Make-over and Personal Success.

Prior to this innovative US sojourn, Courtenay achieved a Bachelor of Social Science in Politics, Philosophy and Economics degree, a Postgraduate Diploma in Entrepreneurship (PDE), plus an Online Marketing Short Course at UCT; she then coached as a Neuro-linguistics Practitioner.
