The Days of the Dinosaurs exhibition marks an historic event for South Africa as well as the Sandton Convention Centre. As the first and biggest interactive dinosaur exhibition of its kind for the country, this massive travelling exhibition will also be the longest-running.
Taking over Exhibition Hall 2 at SCC from 20 June 2014 to 20 July, the 3 600m² interactive, animatronic exhibition features 45 life-sized dinosaurs in 12 scenes, as well as two skeletons and seven dinosaurs in the interactive area. The exhibition was developed in Argentina and is coming to South Africa from Spain. It requires 11 shipping containers to transport the complete exhibition over 35 days and six days to be put together under stringent guidelines.
Visitors will be treated to a unique experience. Each scene is constructed under the guidance of a team of palaeontologists, geologists and geographers, ensuring realistic and natural sequences of species quantities, sizes, movements and routines. The dedication to the scientific research and interactive possibilities ensures a realistic, fun and educational experience of the prehistoric periods depicted.
“Huisgenoot, YOU and DRUM magazines have been looking for a brand event that could span across all three brands and be as relevant to a family in Soweto, as it is to a family in Somerset West or Sandton. The educational part of the exhibition was also a big plus, as this is one of our key content pillars,” says Charlene Beukes, Media 24, Weekly Magazines, General Manager
The exhibition is complimented by a 3D-cinema depicting a trip through the prehistoric ages, a dino drawing section and a dino sandbox which features an excavation zone displaying the process of discovery. There will be dino rides for children under three as well as an opportunity to take a commemorative photo with the Triceratops or Tyrannosaurus Rex model. A trip to the dino shop filled with a variety of gifts is the perfect way to end this experience into the prehistoric past.
“The SCC team is proud to be the Gauteng venue of choice for the inaugural Days of the Dinosaurs exhibition in Africa. As a team we understand that exhibitions of this stature require extensive expertise and capability, which the SCC is able to provide. As one of Africa’s premier venues, situated in the cosmopolitan city of Johannesburg and having hosted a myriad of dynamic and successful exhibitions, the SCC offers the ideal platform for an event of this nature,” says Dr Matifaza Nyazema, Executive Director of the SCC.
