SA Conference chats to Markus Fritz, general manager at Hilton Durban, to find out more about the hotel’s refurbishment project.
Why was the decision made to do a refurbishment?
The hotel has been a great success since opening 17 years ago. However, in order to continue exceeding guest expectations, we believe the refurbishment will be warmly welcomed by guests, new and old, and it is an opportunity to reposition Hilton Durban.- There are three phases to the refurbishment. What was the thought process behind this and for the various things planed during each phase?
The refurbishment’s three-phased approach will ensure the hotel can remain fully operational during the renovation. Guests require access to essential areas of the hotel at all times and we wish to minimise disruption whenever and wherever we can. The first phase will focus on the lobby reception area. Phase two will begin at the end of 2014 with the introduction of a contemporary restaurant concept followed by the Rivets Bar, remodelling of the Presidential Suite and re-styling of 150 bedrooms from floors 12 to 16. The final phase, planned for 2016, will involve the re-styling of the remaining bedrooms, all meeting venues, the ballroom, and the hotel’s popular Rainbow Terrace restaurant.
- The new décor is described as ethnic chic. Why was the decision made to go for this type of design?
We wanted the hotel to capture the spirit and inspiration of e-Thekwini as well as the rich culture and heritage of South Africa whilst maintaining the contemporary atmosphere Hilton Durban is known for. - What makes Hilton Durban a firm favourite for the professional event organiser and business traveller?
Location! We are strategically positioned directly opposite the hugely successful International Convention Centre, which continues to host major local and international events. We are also an easy 5km journey to the city centre and close to three major sports arenas. In addition, we are no stranger to awards – Hilton Durban was honoured with South Africa’s Favourite Hotel award and South Africa’s Leading Business Hotel at the World Travel Awards in 2013.
