FIDE chess tournament at The Maslow | The Planner

Sun International’s Maslow Hotel is proud to align with Chess South Africa (CHESSA) as the venue sponsor of the FIDE tournament taking place from Thursday, 26 March to Sunday, 29 March 2015.

The prestigious event will see the cream of the crop of South Africa’s chess players pit their skills against each other in an international tournament accredited and recognized by the World Chess Federation.

About 12 FIDE -rated players will compete in the tournament by invite only. The players’ results will reflect against their FIDE rating in addition to their CHESSA rating. Historically, the only way for a South African chess player to achieve a FIDE rating would be to travel overseas to compete in a tournament under the auspices of FIDE. However, following the appointment of Brian van Zyl as counselor, along with Nina Joubert, SA is now able to stage international, FIDE-accredited tournaments.

The tournament at The Maslow is one of a number of FIDE-recognised tournaments to be hosted in South Africa in 2015.

“We are proud to be associated with FIDE as the venue sponsor of the FIDE Tournament. CHESSA does tremendous work to unite South African chess players, inculcate a passion for the gameamongst South Africans young and old, and provide a platform for them to compete both locally and abroad,” says Johan Scheepers, general manager of The Maslow.
