Johannesburg’s reputation as an unbeatable film destination has been further bolstered by box office sensation, Tell Me Sweet Something. Directed by Akin Omotoso, Tell Me Sweet Something joins the ranks of several top international and local films that have been filmed in Johannesburg including The Bang Bang Club, District 9, Tsotsi and Invictus.
Tell Me Sweet Something, directed by Akin Omotoso has rapidly become a box office sensation since its premier on 4 September. Filmed on location in Maboneng, the film showcases the unusual beauty of the inner city’s fringe and the people that make the precinct one of Johannesburg’s trendiest eclectic hubs.
The City’s MMC for Economic Development, Councillor Ruby Mathang said Johannesburg’s offerings makes Johannesburg a very attractive location choice for both local as well as international films.
“Johannesburg is a premier global, all year round business, filming and leisure destination for local, national and international audiences, as well as being the gateway to Africa. It is a world-class African city offering world class facilities and skills.”
Johannesburg boasts first-rate infrastructure, together with ideal all year round weather for filming and a variety of accessible locations. Moreover, it’s also an affordable destination with state of the art production facilities, skilled and experienced film crews, a burgeoning labour force, as well as key support logistics and services.
“As the City’s leadership, we recognize that the film industry is important for our economic growth, as well as for our reputation as a world class African city and business hub. We are committed to creating an environment in which the private sector can thrive and confidently invest in the film sector,” said Cllr Mathang.
The City’s latest film credential, Tell Me Sweet Something is a local romcom that tells the story of an unlikely pair whose love prevails against the odds. Nomzamo Mbatha stars as Moratiwa, an aspirant writer and the owner of a bookshop in the heart of Johannesburg, who meets the dashing male model Nat, played by Maps Maponyane. The unlikely pair meet and despite the odds fall head over heels in love, that is until Nat’s pregnant ex-girlfriend enters the fray and life and love is turned on its head.
Tell Me Sweet Something has received tremendous raves and reviews for its beautiful story-telling, the professionalism of the performances as well as for its unmistakably local flavour.
