In a statement issued by the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority on 11 June, it was announced that the Indian Ocean island state will be open to international travellers from 15 July 2021.
According to a statement issued on behalf of the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA), Mauritius is looking forward to welcoming international travellers from 15 July 2021. The idyllic island will be opening its borders in phases, with the first phase, from 15 July to 30 September 2021 open to vaccinated travellers.
“Holidaymakers will be able to enjoy facilities within their chosen resort premises, including the swimming pool and beach. If guests stay over 14 days and have negative PCR tests during their stay in the resort, they will be able to explore the island’s attractions. However, for shorter stays, they may leave the resort earlier and travel back home,” notes the statement.
Pre-approved destinations and entry requirements
The MTPA will make a list of pre-approved Covid-19 safe resorts available from 20 June 2021 on its website. In addition, travellers to Mauritius who are aged 18 years or older must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 and present a negative PCR test result taken 5-7 days prior. Travellers can expect a PCR test to be done upon arrival at the airport in Mauritius and will be subject to another test one week later, followed by a third test two weeks into their stay.
Phase 2
For Phase 2 of opening its borders to international travel, from 1 October 2021, vaccinated travellers will be allowed entry without restrictions upon presentation of a negative PCR test taken not longer than within 72 hours before departure.
Unvaccinated travellers will be subject to 14 days in-room quarantine for both Phases 1 and 2. Following the announcement of the acceleration of its vaccination campaign, Mauritius aims to achieve herd immunity by the end of September, during which frontline workers of the tourism industry were prioritised. This aims to ensure the safest possible revival of the Mauritius tourism industry.
The country’s response to the pandemic has been ranked among the best in the world. “The safety of Mauritians and visitors has been a top priority since the outbreak of Covid-19 and the success is a result of a joint effort by the Mauritian government and the island’s population,” concludes the MTPA’s statement.
