The African Development Bank (AfDB) will, from today, convene heads of state and important government leaders for its Annual Meetings, which run from today until Friday in the capital of Ghana, Accra.
Under the theme of Achieving Climate Resilience, and a Just Energy Transition for Africa, the Annual Meetings will act as a forerunner to the UN Climate Change Conference, or COP-27taking place in Egypt in November.
“The Bank will be focusing a lot more on infrastructure investments to build the resilience of countries, social resilience, economic resilience and also environmental resilience in general, including climate resilience,” noted Dr Martin Fregene, director of the AfDB’s agriculture and agro-industry department during a virtual press conference.
The AfDB announced this past week that its board of directors approved a US$1.5 billion facility to assist African countries in averting a looming food crisis on the continent in the wake of the Russian-Ukrainian war.
“The African Development Bank’s $1.5 billion African Emergency Food Production Facility is an unprecedented comprehensive initiative to support smallholder farmers in filling the food shortfall,” said the Bank in its statement.
The facility will provide up to 20 million African smallholder farmers with inputs such as certified seeds and fertilisers to enable them to produce a projected 38 million tons in yield.
