South Africa has reason to celebrate as the nation’s government announced yesterday that it has lifted Covid-19 restrictions.
South African citizens, businesses and industries had cause for celebration today, as the country’s Minister of Health, Joe Phaahla, was said to have “quietly gazetted” the lifting of Covid-19 regulations yesterday. In addition to the wearing of masks no longer being mandatory, the 50% capacity limitation has also been lifted.
“We are absolutely thrilled that government has lifted the restriction of 50%-only capacity in conferences, events, exhibitions, musical events, and big stadium events,” commented Rosemary Anderson, national chairperson of the Federated Hospitality Association of South Africa (FEDHASA).
Carol Weaving, managing director of RX Africa, echoed the sentiment, stating that: “This is a much-needed boost for the travel, tourism and hospitality industry. The limited capacities set at all venues posed a major commercial issue for all our businesses. We are in the business of building businesses, now we can now focus on driving our industry forward again and boost economic development within our sector.”
Meanwhile, Justin van Wyk, the CEO of Big Concerts, was thrilled about the development.
“This important development sets us on the path to economic recovery. South African music lovers cautious about attending large concerts can now attend live shows with full confidence that the shows will happen, and that the environment will be safe,” he said.
