Growth in Africa’s hotel sector | The Planner

The hospitality sector suffered severely in Covid times. It is therefore great news to hear that role players across the continent are very optimistic about their industry in 2023. This sentiment was recently recorded through the 2023 Hotel and Hospitality Industry Confidence Index. It is also supported by projections from Statista that confirm a projected annual growth rate of 8.68% for the sector over the next 5 years. Hotel revenue in Africa is predicted to reach US$13.80 billion by 2027.

Evan Schiff, Portfolio Director at dmg events, says: “This positive outlook on growth in the sector is high on the agenda at the upcoming Hotel & Hospitality Show.” The show, in its sixth year, is hosted by dmg events. It will take place 18-20 May at the Sandton Convention Centre. This popular show is bumper-packed with exhibits, seminars, innovations, competitions and sustainable ideas.

Exclusive eco-friendly products such as guest amenities, operating equipment and furniture will be found on the returning landmark destination, The Sustainability Pavilion by Hotelstuff/Greenstuff, at the show.

Retaining staff

Housekeeping staff is the backbone of the hotel industry.

A panel discussion will highlight one of the prevalent issues facing the hospitality sector: building a diverse work force. A staggering 94.3% of respondents participating in the The 2023 Hotel and Hospitality Industry Confidence Index are committed to supporting and retaining staff.

The show launched an annual competition for housekeeping teams in 2018, as the organisers felt the work by these staff members often goes unnoticed. The Southern African Housekeepers League of Champions, as it is called, will be back in full force this year, and it will as exciting and highly competitive as ever. Last year’s winners were the team from Riverside Sun Hotel. Meetings will inform readers who the winning team was as soon as it is announced. Good luck to all participants! Another exciting addition to this show is the South African leg of the Global Pizza Challenge. This is the 14th challenge and it already has all pizza connoisseurs eager to sample the entries of South Africa’s best pizza chefs! Meetings will share news of this year’s winner as soon as the cook-off has been concluded and the judges have chosen the 2023 winner. Read more about this here. The Hotel GM Forum will also return in 2023.

We encourage B2B matchmaking and look forward to this year’s show.
