The International Federation of Exhibition and Event Services (IFES), a signatory of the Net Zero Carbon Events pledge, has committed to measuring and offsetting the carbon footprint of all future IFES events. The upcoming IFES Masterclass 2023, taking place from 20 to 22 November in Frankfurt, Germany, will be the first event to put this promise into practice.
A collective investment
Masterclass attendees are being encouraged to offset their portion of CO² emissions with a nominal, once-off payment of € 18.25 (R368) to cover an estimated average 365 kg of carbon emissions per person.
Part of IFES’s strategy to address their carbon impact includes raising awareness among members and encouraging them to contribute towards the initiative. Therefore the Masterclass attendees are being encouraged to offset their portion of CO² emissions with a nominal, once-off payment of € 18.25 (R368) to cover an estimated average 365 kg of carbon emissions per person. Because IFES has 280 members from across the globe, the calculation accounts for a 1 000 km economy travel flight, three nights at a hotel, seven meals, and 100 km of local transport.
Replacing and replenishing a biodiversity hotspot
The offset fee will go directly to the FAMAB Stiftung FAMAB-Forest project in the Mamoni Valley, Panama. Valuable areas of rainforest in the region have been lost due to illegal clearing, so replacing them is seen as a priority in the race to stop climate change. The creation and conservation of a new forest is expected to contribute both to global biodiversity and the social security of local workers and their families. Additionally, being close to the equator, the forests will grow more quickly and therefore result in a quicker CO² reduction.
Many IFES members contributed to the initiation of this German-based project, so it is a choice that is close to their hearts.
