Mozambique Gas & Energy Summit to Drive Energy Transition Dialogue | The Planner

The Mozambique Gas & Energy Summit & Exhibition is set to take place from 19 to 21 November 2024 at the Joaquim Chissano International Conference Centre in Maputo.

Organised by dmg events in partnership with ENH (Empresa Nacional de Hidrocarbonetos), the ninth edition of this prestigious event will serve as the official platform for key stakeholders in Mozambique’s energy sector to engage with the global gas, LNG, and energy industries.

Bringing together over 3,500 attendees, including industry leaders, investors, and policymakers, the Summit will feature critical discussions around Mozambique’s energy transition. Topics such as offtake negotiations, project development tenders, multilateral partnerships, and the exchange of knowledge and best practices will be at the forefront. With over 900 conference delegates, 275 exhibitors, and representatives from over 35 countries, the event will drive crucial dialogue on Mozambique’s role in the global energy transition.

Local content development will also be a key focus of the Summit, with sessions dedicated to empowering Mozambican SMEs and start-ups within the energy sector. The event is poised to highlight the country’s vast energy potential, including its mega projects in solar, wind, and hydro, as well as its plans to expand the use of natural gas.

Mozambique: Pioneering a Sustainable Energy Future
Mozambique’s energy sector is rapidly evolving, with the country positioning itself as a leader in the global shift towards clean energy. At COP28 in Dubai, President Filipe Nyusi highlighted Mozambique’s $80 billion energy transition strategy, aimed at leveraging its abundant natural resources to meet domestic, regional, and global energy demands.

“Mozambique’s energy strategy will transform the country into a sustainable investment destination, while also ensuring access to energy for its people,” said President Nyusi. This dual approach of transitioning to cleaner energy while addressing the needs of the half of the population still without electricity lies at the heart of Mozambique’s future plans.

Hon. Carlos Zacarias, Mozambique’s Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, echoed these sentiments, outlining how the country is harnessing its gas reserves while accelerating renewable energy projects in hydro, wind, and solar power. One key project, the Mphanda Nkuwa Dam, is already attracting international interest and will play a pivotal role in Mozambique’s diverse energy mix.

A Decarbonised Future
Mozambique’s energy transition is anchored on four strategic pillars:

  1. Expanding clean energy through wind, solar, and hydro projects.
  2. Capitalising on green industrialisation with integrated projects along industrial corridors like Nacala.
  3. Achieving universal access to energy by 2030, focusing on solar mini-grids and clean cooking solutions.
  4. Promoting green mobility, including the adoption of electric vehicles, biofuels, and gas-powered vehicles.

These efforts underscore Mozambique’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint while meeting the demands of its people and global markets. The country’s energy projects are designed to align with international standards and best practices, ensuring long-term sustainable development.

Significant Milestones in Mozambique’s Energy Sector
In August, Eni, in partnership with ExxonMobil, CNPC, GALP, KOGAS, and ENH, celebrated the production of 5 million tons of LNG from the Coral Sul FLNG located offshore in the Rovuma Basin. This significant milestone represents not only a major technical achievement but also Mozambique’s growing role in global LNG production.

“After the success of Coral Sul, we are ready to launch Coral Norte,” said Marica Calabrese, Managing Director at Eni Rovuma Basin. Eni and ENH have since signed contracts for a new offshore block in the Angoche Basin, further expanding Mozambique’s energy portfolio.

In early September, ExxonMobil gave the green light for two consortia to begin the front-end engineering and design (FEED) contest for its major Rovuma LNG project. Once complete, the selected consortium will be awarded the contract to build the 18 million tonnes per annum plant, solidifying Mozambique’s role in meeting future global energy needs.

Mozambique’s Global Energy Potential
As Mozambique continues to grow its energy infrastructure and expertise, the country is set to become a global leader in sustainable energy production. The deepwater Mamba field in Area 4 will supply gas to the onshore Rovuma LNG site in Cabo Delgado, a region critical to Mozambique’s energy transition and industrialisation.

Looking forward, the Mozambique Gas & Energy Summit & Exhibition in November 2024 will serve as a key moment for the country to showcase its readiness to lead the way in the energy transition. With a combination of decarbonisation strategies, renewable energy projects, and significant international partnerships, Mozambique is well on its way to securing a sustainable energy future for itself and its global partners.
