If the latest statistics on tourist arrivals are anything to go by, then this coming December festive season will be a bumper edition for South Africa’s tourism sector. The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC) believes that it also means that they, too, could soon reach another important visitor milestone.
According to the Department of Tourism, South Africa recorded 7,634,261 international tourist arrivals into South Africa in the first nine months of the year, an increase of just more than 1 million on the same period last year. The statistics were released on Monday, 3 November.
The Department’s statistics echo sentiments expressed by a recent update from provincial economic development body Wesgro.
“Looking ahead to the first half of 2025 (January–June), total international arrivals to the Western Cape reached a significant recovery of 87.4% when compared to the first half of 2019 levels. The African continent and Australasia reached full recovery levels during this period. Meanwhile, North America (89.1% recovery) and Europe (82.8% recovery) are nearly fully recovered to 2019 levels,” its report stated. It also believes that the increase in arrivals , “highlights the resilience and gradual rebound of the tourism market in the Western Cape, particularly post-pandemic (2019).”
Managing Director of TMACC, Wahida Parker, described these numbers as a powerful indicator that the tourism sector’s tireless recovery efforts are bringing international visitor numbers back to pre-pandemic levels.
“These figures are the clearest possible indication that the incredible efforts of both the public and private sectors to reignite South African tourism are truly paying off,” said Parker.
“We are seeing the results of coordinated destination marketing and robust public-private partnerships. The recovery is officially in full swing, and this milestone is a cause for celebration across the entire value chain.”
Parker noted that the positive trend sets a strong foundation for the crucial end-of-year period, expressing high optimism for the upcoming summer holidays.
“An increase of over one million arrivals gives us immense confidence that we are set for a very busy and prosperous December holiday season,” Parker said.
“The festive season is a vital period for generating revenue and creating jobs. This sustained growth in arrivals is the perfect precursor, signalling robust activity in key tourist hubs, particularly in Cape Town.”
Parker stressed that maintaining this positive momentum requires continued diligence and unity across the industry.
“The success of this season depends on all role players and industry stakeholders collaborating and cooperating. From transport providers and accommodation establishments to local restaurants and attractions, we must work together to ensure a seamless, world-class experience that encourages visitors to return year after year. Tourism is a collective responsibility,” she added.
TMACC confirmed its full readiness to handle the anticipated influx of visitors. The company expects to welcome its 33millionth visitor in the next couple of weeks, after reaching the 32m milestone at the beginning of this year.
“The Cableway is fully prepared and very excited to welcome visitors from near and far,” said Parker.
“We have implemented all necessary operational plans to ensure safety, efficiency, and an unforgettable journey to the summit of one of the New7Wonders of Nature. “We look forward to sharing Table Mountain’s breathtaking views with guests from around the globe, from across the country, and with those who live right here in our beautiful Mother City.”
