Cape Canopy Tour and Houw Hoek Hotel launch a new zipline adventure experience one hour from Cape Town
A new zipline experience on the N2 is giving travellers heading south from Cape Town a reason to stop before they reach their destination. Developed by Cape Canopy Tour in partnership with Houw Hoek Hotel, the dual-line ride is positioned at the natural transition point between the city and three of the Western Cape’s major leisure regions, completing in approximately 30 minutes and operating on a fully free-sale basis.
The experience is deliberately lean: a single, continuous dual-line ride completed in approximately 30 minutes, requiring no advance reservation and available on a fully free-sale basis. Two guests can ride simultaneously, side by side, following a short walk across a suspension bridge to the launch point where trained operators manage the descent from start to landing.
The product is fully commissionable to the trade and has been structured to integrate into existing packaged itineraries without rigid time slot commitments – a deliberate design decision aimed at reducing scheduling pressure for tour operators while adding a revenue-generating activity component to Cape Town departures heading south.
“This is not a destination product that requires travellers to build their day around it,” says Ryan Larkman, Managing Director of Cape Canopy Tour. “It is the kind of stop that makes a journey more memorable without complicating it.”
Positioned approximately one hour from Cape Town and at the natural transition point between the city and three of the Western Cape’s major leisure regions – Hermanus, the Overberg and the Garden Route – the zipline fills a gap that has existed on the N2 for some time: a structured, accessible, commercially viable activity that gives travellers a reason to stop rather than pass through.
Cape Canopy Tour, which led the technical design and operational systems for the zipline, brings established safety standards to the installation. Harness fitting, system attachment, launch and landing management are all handled by trained operators, with equipment maintained according to operational safety protocols. Houw Hoek Hotel provides the broader hospitality infrastructure, meaning non-riders travelling with a group can make use of the on-site restaurant, coffee and refreshments while others ride.
The product has been developed with a deliberately broad market in mind. Families, couples, FIT travellers, small groups, and coach tours are all considered primary audiences. The experience is designed to be accessible rather than extreme, making it suitable across age groups and fitness levels.
For the trade, the commercial case is straightforward: no booking complexity, short duration, broad demographic appeal, and a natural geographic position within existing routing. The zipline requires no restructuring of current itineraries to accommodate it.
