How Nicole Smith and the Two Oceans Aquarium Bring Purpose, Passion, and Penguins to the Events Industry

Few venues in South Africa can match the sensory magic of hosting an event surrounded by shimmering shoals of fish, gliding rays, and the hypnotic sway of kelp forests. For Nicole Smith, Events Manager at Cape Town’s iconic Two Oceans Aquarium, it’s a workplace that blends world-class hospitality with a conservation-driven mission. Nicole is not just running events — she’s helping redefine what a meaningful, purpose-led function looks like in today’s MICE industry. With her youthful energy, industry experience, and a clear passion for the ocean, she is bringing fresh perspectives to event planning, sustainability, and guest engagement.

From Internship to Industry Leader
Nicole’s career began with a clear vision: “I always knew I wanted to be in events,” she says. After studying Event Management, she joined the Cape Town International Convention Centre as an intern, working her way through multiple roles before shifting into venue-based eventing.
When an opportunity arose at the Two Oceans Aquarium, Nicole knew it was a perfect fit. “It’s incredibly fulfilling to take a concept and bring it to life — seeing people experience and enjoy something that started as an idea,” she says.
But the journey hasn’t been without challenges. Steering a venue-based events team through the COVID-19 pandemic tested every skill she had. “It took creative problem-solving to bring our portfolio back to, and even beyond, pre-pandemic levels,” she recalls.

A Venue with a Mission
Unlike many event spaces, the Aquarium isn’t just about ambience — it’s about advocacy. Hosting an event here directly supports marine conservation and education.
“Our exhibits provide a spectacular natural backdrop. You’re not stepping into a blank canvas, but into a space that already holds magic,” Nicole explains. The Aquarium’s event spaces are versatile enough for everything from intimate dinners to large-scale gala evenings.

The Avenue
A bright and modern conference and event space, The Avenue offers a blank canvas for daytime gatherings, product launches, and workshops, complete with in-house AV and flexible seating plans. Flooded with natural light, it opens up to a private terrace — ideal for networking over coffee breaks or sundowners.

I&J Ocean Exhibit Venue
This is the showstopper. Guests dine, mingle, or celebrate in front of a 1.6-million-litre ocean display, home to turtles, rays, and hundreds of fish. The panoramic viewing window creates an awe-inspiring backdrop without the need for elaborate décor.

Atlantic Ocean Gallery
Perfect for cocktail evenings and networking functions, this space is lined with fascinating exhibits showcasing South Africa’s Atlantic marine life. The built-in lighting design adds a soft, aquatic glow to evening events.

Turnkey Event Service
The Aquarium’s events team offers a comprehensive, one-stop service — managing venue hire, catering, décor, AV, and staffing through a trusted network of suppliers. This approach allows for seamless setup and execution, even in the tightest turnaround times. Nicole’s team often transforms a public space into a full-function venue in under 45 minutes after closing hours.

Sustainability in Action
Sustainability isn’t a marketing line for the Aquarium — it’s a daily operational standard. From the catering team to event policies, every detail is designed to reduce environmental impact while maintaining high standards of style and service.

Locally Sourced, SASSI-Compliant Menus
The kitchen team works closely with local farmers, fisheries, and artisanal producers. Seafood is always SASSI-approved, meats and produce are sourced seasonally, and menus are planned to minimise waste. The focus is on fresh, flavourful dishes that showcase South African ingredients while supporting small-scale suppliers.

Plastic-Free Events
Single-use plastics are strictly prohibited. All beverages are served in glass bottles, and packaging for any products brought on-site must meet the Aquarium’s sustainability standards.

Waste Reduction and Composting
Organic waste is composted, and recycling is built into event clean-up processes. Wherever possible, décor is reusable or made from recycled materials.

Client Collaboration
Sustainability is part of the conversation from the moment a client enquires. Nicole and her team guide planners toward eco-friendly materials, sourcing, and energy-efficient solutions without compromising on aesthetics.

TOP TIPS: Hosting a Greener Event

Choose a venue with a proven sustainability policy.
Eliminate single-use plastics entirely.
Source menus locally to reduce your event’s carbon footprint.
Incorporate décor that is reusable or recyclable.
Educate guests on your event’s green initiatives.

The Penguin Exhibit: What’s Next
One of the most exciting developments at the Aquarium is the construction of a brand-new penguin exhibit. While it won’t be accessible for nighttime events, it will enrich daytime visits and conference packages that include Aquarium access.
“For many national and international delegates, visiting the Aquarium is a highlight. With the revamped exhibit, that experience will be even richer,” Nicole says. The upgrades are part of a broader commitment to keeping the Aquarium’s offering modern, engaging, and mission-driven.

Meeting the Changing Needs of MICE
Nicole sees a clear shift in the events industry toward experiences that are personal, meaningful, and immersive. While technology is part of the equation, she believes the essence of eventing is still about human connection.
“It’s about how you make people feel,” she says. “At the Aquarium, we listen carefully to clients. No two events are the same, and every detail matters.”
This personal approach means the team can work across a wide range of budgets without sacrificing quality. Their reputation for attentive service and flawless execution keeps clients coming back.

Why Cape Town and the Aquarium Are Thriving
Cape Town’s position as a global tourism and events destination gives the Aquarium a strong platform for success. With a steady stream of returning clients and new business from corporate, leisure, and international markets, Nicole is optimistic about the future.
“Venues like the Aquarium — along with other boutique and niche spaces — are uniquely positioned to thrive,” she says. “Our role is to deliver experiences that are unforgettable, with purpose.”

A Woman to Watch
Nicole’s leadership reflects the Women in MICE ethos — resilience, innovation, and collaboration. She is proving that sustainability and memorable guest experiences can go hand in hand.
Her advice to young professionals is simple but powerful: “Be clear about your purpose. The hours may be long and the pressure intense, but with commitment, a willingness to learn, and the right network, you will carve out your place in the industry.”
At the Two Oceans Aquarium, every event is more than a celebration — it’s a reflection of purpose, people, and the powerful connection we share with the sea.
