South Africa will be in lockdown from midnight on Thursday, 26 March 2020 until Thursday, 16 April 2020, in an effort to slow the spread of coronavirus disease infections.
Essential food and emergency services will remain operational during this period; however vulnerable members of our communities may struggle to gain basic necessities due to their circumstances – a situation made worse by a disrupted economy, business closures and panic buying by the public.
Spier Wine Farm in Stellenbosch, Cape Town decided to offer relief to its local community. It partnered with the Sustainability Institute and the Spier-based Living Soils Community Farm to create and distribute food packs that will provide nourishment to 450 families during the lockdown period. With an average of five members per family, approximately 2 250 people will receive help through this project.
The relief food boxes were distributed on Thursday, 26 March 2020 ahead of the nationwide lockdown scheduled for midnight on the same day.
