The quirky seaside town of Muizenberg will play host to the first in a series of Pop-Up Art Auction on 12 December at Studio 26, no 26 Palmer Road, Muizenberg Village, to raise much-needed funds for non-profit organisations, starting with Beauty Without Cruelty SA.
The fundraiser auction will include work by a range of established and upcoming artists working in a mix of mediums, from the complex linocuts of renown artist and struggle activist Lionel Davis to the exquisite recycled glass chandeliers of Riaan Chambers and the mercurial animal sculptures of budding artist Tatiana Kelm.
“The aim is to raise awareness of animal rights within our community and raise as much money as possible for this cause, while also showcasing artists and giving them the opportunity to sell work and gain exposure to art buyers,” explains Charlotte Corbett, owner of Studio 26 where the auction will be held, as well as one of the contributing artists.
She adds that this is an opportunity for all art lovers – from serious collectors to lay appreciators – to add to their collection at a fraction of the usual cost: “As a zero profit event, there is no auctioneer or exhibitor fee attached to any of the work, which enables us to drop the prices radically. In addition, the artists involved are dedicated to raising as much funds for Beauty Without Cruelty as possible, therefore they are
either donating artwork and/or contributing to the collection at the lowest price.”
In line with BWC’s ethos of complete non-exploitation of animals, none of the artworks on sale at the Pop-Up Auction will incorporate shell, bone, feathers or any other animal ingredients.
The Pop-Up Auction will be the first in what Corbett plans to be a regular fundraising art auction, each supporting a different non-profit organisation. The auctions will alternate with art exhibitions at Studio26, timed to coincide with the Village Vibes Christmas Fair, the event is held in the heart of Muizenberg Village. This family-friendly event includes a bustling street market, a Kid’s Entrepreneur market where children sell their “makes and bakes”, children’s theatre by The Jungle Theatre Company and art exhibitions/open studios.
“The Village Vibes Experience is aimed at showcasing the creativity, ingenuity and talent of the unique community who live in Muizenberg Village, and it draws local crowds and visitors from around the world,” says organiser June Homan of JOON restaurant. “The art auctions and art exhibitions are yet one more excellent reason to visit our village.”
