Event decor no-nos | The Planner

When deciding on what décor you want to use to realise your client’s event, remember the following:

• Avoid abnormally large items, props and staging. They are expensive to transport and may pose problems when gaining access to the venue or fitting into the room.
• Know the 10-day forecast before an event and have a back-up plan for decor items you are using that are affected by adverse weather conditions.
• Don’t use decorations that violate fire or safety codes, such as flammable paper – including posters, kraft paper and streamers.
• Don’t hang decorations, draping and backdrops from light fixtures, freestanding structures and ceilings as this creates a potential safety hazard.
• Avoid choosing a theme and decorations which may be disrespectful of the guests’ cultures, backgrounds, identities and beliefs.
