FEDHASA comments on the appointment of a new Minister of Tourism
Following a cabinet reshuffle and the appointment of Lindiwe Sisulu as the new Minister of Tourism, South Africa’s local hospitality sector can look forward to renewed prospects and growth opportunities.

In communication shared with The Planner Guru, the Federated Hospitality Association of South Africa (FEDHASA) has welcomed the appointment of Lindiwe Sisulu as the country’s new Minister of Tourism. This follows the recent cabinet reshuffle announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

“Important role players in tourism are keen to work with Minister Sisulu to turn the COVID-19 trauma into a magnificent opportunity to propel South African tourism to a level it has never reached before.”

Digital nomads

A growing trend catalysed by Covid-19 is the ‘digital nomad’ opportunity, which has resulted in a significant portion of the workforce working remotely from their destination of choice.

“Without any marketing, Cape Town already ranked #16th in the world for remote working… With the correct marketing and visa facilitation, FEDHASA believes we can get Cape Town to rank #3 in the world,” notes Rosemary.

She adds that the digital nomad trend in South Africa could see the tourism and hospitality sectors grow to as many as 1 million bed nights per year and be a gamechanger for the country’s tourism industry. However, for this to take off, good quality connectivity and infrastructure are essential, says Rosemary.

“South Africa is one of the few countries in Africa that can robustly provide the infrastructure and the strong connectivity required to work remotely, within internationally well-priced, beautiful settings… Important role players in tourism are keen to work with Minister Sisulu to turn the Covid-19 trauma into a magnificent opportunity to propel South African tourism to a level it has never reached before,” Rosemary concludes.
