Rwanda is due to host the highly anticipated Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in June. Here is what we can look forward to.
Following its postponement in 2020 and 2021 as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, Rwanda’s government, together with other heads of state from Commonwealth nations, are preparing for the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2022 (#CHOGM22).
“Leaders of the Commonwealth countries meet every two years at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). Each CHOGM is held in a different member country, with the respective Prime Minister or President as Commonwealth Chair-in-Office. Since 1971, a total of 25 meetings have been held, with the most recent held in London in 2018,” it states on the official CHOGM website.
CHOGM22 being held in Rwanda is significant as it is reportedly the first time a Member State that does not have historical ties with the United Kingdom will host the meeting.
Dignitaries and delegates can look forward to an inclusive dialogue during this year’s CHOGM, with youth, women, people and business all receiving a separate forum focus.
“The last two years have made it clear to us that we are more connected than ever before and we must work together to achieve the tangible and sustainable results we want,” President of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, was quoted as saying.

About CHOGM
Connected by similar traditions, language, governance and legal structures, monarchs, presidents and prime ministers from Africa, the Caribbean and Americas, Europe, Asia and the Pacific, meet every two years at CHOGM to explore how they can pool their resources and innovations to transform joint challenges into exciting opportunities.
CHOGM is a pivotal agenda-setting and decision-making space for the diverse community of 54 Commonwealth countries.
Due to the global Covid-19 pandemic, CHOGM 2020 was postponed twice.
Under the overarching theme ‘Delivering a Common Future: Connecting, Innovating, Transforming’, CHOGM has been rescheduled for the week of 20 June 2022.
Commonwealth leaders will travel to Rwanda to reaffirm their common values and agree on actions and policies to improve the lives of all their citizens.
Ahead of CHOGM, youth and gender activists, representatives from civil society, and business leaders, will convene special forums to ensure their key concerns and perspectives are considered in leaders’ decision-making.
