Table Mountain Cableway Celebrates 95 Years of Awe-Inspiring Views | The Planner

On October 4, 2024, the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC) proudly marks 95 years of welcoming visitors to one of the world’s most iconic destinations. Since 1929, the Cableway has been delivering unforgettable experiences, offering breathtaking views of Cape Town and its surroundings to millions of visitors from around the globe.

“Celebrating our 95th anniversary is an incredible milestone, and we’re excited to share it with everyone who has supported us over the years,” says Selma Hercules, Executive Director of TMACC.

A Look Back at the Cableway’s Journey

The story of the Cableway began in the 1870s with a proposal to build a railway on Table Mountain’s slopes. However, it wasn’t until 1926 that Norwegian engineer Trygve Stromsoe proposed the idea of constructing a cableway, setting the stage for the official launch on October 4, 1929.

In the nearly century-long history of the Cableway, it has undergone three major upgrades, continuously evolving while maintaining its position as a beloved feature of Cape Town’s landscape.

Over the years, the Cableway has been visited by many notable figures, including Oprah Winfrey, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sting, and Daniel Radcliffe. Mountaineer Sir Edmund Hillary, the first person to summit Everest, famously described Table Mountain as “probably no more spectacular place in the world.”

95th Anniversary Celebrations and Special Offers

To mark this significant milestone, TMACC has prepared a range of celebrations and special deals for visitors:

  • Birthday Special: South African visitors who celebrate their birthday in October can enjoy a free return trip on the Cableway (SA ID required).
  • 95th Anniversary Special: For the entire month of October, South Africans can purchase a special anniversary ticket for R195. This offer is available online and must be booked in advance.
  • Community Initiatives: TMACC will host a charity golf day on November 8 at Atlantic Beach Golf Estate, raising funds for the Volunteer Wildfire Services and Wilderness Search and Rescue, two organizations dedicated to keeping Table Mountain safe.

Looking Forward to the Future

As the Cableway embarks on its next chapter, TMACC is filled with gratitude for its visitors, staff, and partners. “We want to thank everyone who has supported us over the past 95 years,” says Hercules. “We look forward to continuing our journey with you for many more years to come.”
