The Event Greening Forum (EGF) will host an informative virtual workshop on 26 November 2024, focusing on how event logistics can be optimised to reduce carbon emissions and support the global shift towards Net Zero Carbon Events (NZCE). This workshop is a must-attend for event planners, sustainability practitioners, and industry professionals committed to reducing their event’s carbon footprint.
According to research, logistics alone can account for up to 80% of an event’s carbon footprint. This is because trucks, ships, planes, and trains that transport goods and people emit carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and particulate matter, which have detrimental effects on air quality and contribute to global warming.
Another recent study found that the travel-induced carbon footprint for international conferences results in more than 2,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases – equivalent to what approximately 270 UK citizens emit in a whole year. The average participant produces between 500 and 1,500 kg CO2e per conference round-trip.
As the global events industry moves towards a carbon-neutral future, understanding and reducing the carbon emissions generated by logistics is essential.
Learn how to reduce your event’s logistics impact
The EGF’s workshop will provide valuable insights into the often-overlooked role of logistics in event sustainability and offer practical solutions to minimise the environmental footprint of meetings, conferences, and exhibitions.
The keynote presentation will be delivered by Orphee Beinoglou, a Board Member of the International Exhibition Logistics Association (IELA) and the go-to leader of its Sustainability Working Group. Beinoglou is a seasoned expert in event logistics and will share key insights into how logistics professionals are working to decarbonise the events industry.
Following this, a panel of leading industry experts (including IELA Executive Officer Elizabeth Niehaus, IELA South Africa’s Jacqui Nell, and Orphee Beinoglou, as well as dmg events Vice President of South Africa Joshua Low) will explore key solutions for integrating sustainable logistics into event planning and execution.
A greener eventing future
The EGF, together with industry stakeholders like IELA, Triga, and Heritage Eco Events (the Patron Sponsors who made the event possible), is committed to fostering sustainable event practices, including raising awareness of how logistics can contribute to the overall greening of the event space.
By breaking down the logistical components of event planning and offering step-by-step guidance on adopting sustainable practices, attendees will leave equipped to make meaningful changes to their events.
