The Muse
Yang Guifei or Gwefey, one of the four beauties of ancient China, is the muse for this Asian restaurant. It is believed that Guifei’s beauty put the most beautiful flowers to shame. She was the beloved consort of Xuanzong, Emperor of Tang. The pair was often spotted strolling hand in hand among the foliage in the imperial garden. Tragically, the pair fell victim to a plot and the emperor was forced to put Guifei to death. This love story, culminating in its tragic end, has since become a legend.
The Venue
In aligning his restaurant with the rich heritage of his country, owner Louis Liu has gone for a high-end sophisticated look and feel. Hundreds of origami birds adorn the beams of the conservatory and portraits of Chinese beauties cover the walls, but the mosaic of Gwefey is the most striking feature of this restaurant.
With safe and ample parking, air conditioning, access to Wi-Fi, state-of-the-art decor and modern audiovisual equipment, Gwefey is ideal for mini-conferences, workshops, informal boardroom meetings, seminars and corporate lunches, creating a total different feeling from the normal conference set-up.
There are three private dining rooms – Qing, Ming and Tang – which can be converted into one hall or any configuration required for clients. In total, 40 guests can be accommodated in the private dining rooms or 80 guests in the main dining area.
Gwefey can be hired out for a full day or half day, and offers a selection of packages to select from to accommodate any function and budget. Packages can be tailor-made to suit the needs of the client.
The Food
Rather than sticking to traditional fare, Chef Song and his fabulous Chinese team of excellent culinary artists aim to redefine Asian cuisine. They work in an open-view kitchen so that guests can witness the artistry that is unfolding before them – whether it is the chilli chef firing up his dishes or the head chef filleting a fish before steaming it.
All the menu items have been carefully created and tested with fine spices and sauces to create a taste sensation. For seafood lovers, the salty and chilli calamari, spring onion fish fillets, seafood spring rolls and Lobster Kung Po are a must. Poultry lovers will enjoy the Bang Bang Chicken and the Kung Pao Chicken. For those with carnivorous tendencies, the orange flavour beef, beef with black pepper sauce and lamb stir-fry with spring onion and ginger are firm favourites.
Awards
2013 has been a great year for Gwefey as it has received numerous accolades, including best Asian restaurant, best business lunch restaurant and best romantic restaurant in Readers’ Choice Best Of Joburg awards.
