Travelling tip: Get proper sleep | The Planner

The importance of getting enough sleep is often neglected due to travelling. The interrupted sleep many people experience when staying away from home can be as harmful as no sleep is.

General Manager at The Westin Cape Town Rob Kucera shares the top five requirements that every guest needs when sleeping away from home:

1. Avoid altering your sleep schedule
When travelling we tend to adopt a holiday mind-set, which means late nights and early mornings. “Although networking events and late dinners may not be avoided when staying away from home, going to bed and waking up at a time similar to your usual will ensure that you get the proper rest required to take on the day’s activities”, says Kucera.

2. Do the research
When making your reservation, ensure that you ask all the necessary questions about what may affect your sleep. For instance, if the hotel is nearby a bustling strip of restaurants or under construction, the noise will have an impact on your sleep pattern.

3. The significance of the bed
All factors aside, your sleep depends on where you’re sleeping. Stuck with an uncomfortable bed? Forget about getting any proper rest.
Since its introduction in 1999, the Westin Heavenly Bed has eased millions of guests into deep, restful sleep. It is uniquely designed with a plush, pillow-top construction for premium comfort and support.

4. Spacious living
Staying in a room that doesn’t offer sufficient moving space, windows or some sort of a view can contribute to a lack of proper rest. Feeling claustrophobic will put your body at unease, so ensure that you book at a hotel that offers enough space for you to move around comfortably in.

5. Careful what you consume
Avoid eating large meals from room service before bed; instead, have a light meal at the hotel’s restaurant a minimum of two hours before you decide to get some sleep. Going to bed immediately after a meal may cause problems with falling asleep.
