The Durban International Convention Centre is pleased to announce the promotion of Marlene Govender to the role of marketing and sales general manager. Marlene joined the Durban ICC in March 2002 as a marketing and sales co-ordinator and her strengths in customer relations and marketing have been instrumental in her promotions at regular intervals over the past 12 years to various positions of increased responsibility.
The new position was created to add value to the customer experience and drive the sales revenue target at the Durban ICC, as well as to ensure good corporate governance in accordance with the Centre’s succession planning. In her new role, Marlene will provide support to the marketing, sales and events director and will oversee the marketing, sales and events department at the centre.
Commenting on her appointment, Marlene says: “I am passionate about the events industry and have always wanted to work at the Durban ICC because of the incredible impact it has on the City and region. I have played an integral role in bringing some of those amazing events to South Africa. Now in this new role, I look forward to seeing how we can adapt to changing needs of the market and use creative and innovative ways to exceed our clients’ expectations.”
When asked about her goals for the new position, Marlene noted that growth in international market share, the empowerment of staff and developing mutually beneficial customer relations were high on the agenda. “I believe that when we apply ourselves, we can develop new market offerings which dovetail with our client’s needs whilst remaining profitable and sustainable in the long term. I plan to use this opportunity to streamline our processes and ensure we are assisting our clients in the most effective and efficient ways,” Marlene concluded.
Mala Dorasamy, marketing, sales and events director, says: “We are delighted that Marlene has accepted this position. She has a wealth of industry knowledge and will play a vital role in identifying new opportunities, cultivating partnerships and help improve the Durban ICC brand profile. I am excited to see the contribution Marlene will undoubtedly make in her new role towards the on-going success of the Durban ICC.”
