Dabbling in MICE business can prove detrimental | The Planner

The fact that the average seasoned MICE individual has attended umpteen conferences of varying size and capacity or organised several events at a vast array of differing types of venues does not necessarily mean we can dabble with great confidence in the MICE business – of one sort or another – without knowing the full spectrum of requirements.

Here are a few examples to avoid:

Conference producing and organising
Unless serious research is undertaken – it is not possible to make a quick buck out of producing one’s own conference.

Event management training
There are a wide permutation of organising which range from internal bosberaad and dealer product launches on the one hand and dedicated loyalty-based member association conferences. Event management training by lecturers who have not evaluated their course students employer’s in-depth background could miss the mark completely by providing generic event management training.

Non-core planning services
So the staging, décor or registration suppliers have witnessed countless organisers around them and decide it looks so easy – why not do it ourselves and offer the client more services? What is viewed may not be the full picture as MICE organising has a very detailed prior series of tasks which may not be fully understood.

One size does not fit all in the MICE industry – be warned.
