Madagascar has lifted its travel ban on flights from South Africa, enabling Airlink to resume flights between Johannesburg and Antananarivo from 30 January.
Return flights to Madagascar will run weekly, increasing to three flights a week from 14 February 2023, and with the intention to reinstate daily services as demand increases.
Antananarivo, as Madagascarβs capital and main commercial and economic hub, is Airlinkβs immediate priority. The resumption of services to Nosy-Be β a popular destination for the MICE market β will be considered in due course.
A three year suspension
Airlink had to suspend its services between South Africa and Madagascar for almost three years, due to Covid-19 travel bans and a subsequent political fallout between the two nations.
Rodger Foster, Airlink CEO and Managing Director, says, βAirlink, as the designated South African carrier to Madagascar, welcomes the Madagascar governmentβs lifting of the prohibition which lets us re-establish these air services that are vitally important economic, trade and tourism connections between the two countries. We are looking forward to re-connecting South Africa with Madagascar and resuming our role in support of the recovery of ties between the two markets.β
