Restaurant and conference centre for Ten Bompas | The Planner

Winehouse, the new restaurant at Ten Bompas Hotel, has opened its lavish doors in honour of Joanna Flatau’s painting of the sadly departed, uber talented Amy Winehouse.

Says Peter Aucamp, co- owner of Ten Bompas: “The hotel has been well-established over the past 13 years and we decided to refurbish several aspects of the property, including opening the new restaurant.”

Christoff van Staden, co-owner of the hotel, which was his childhood home before being converted with the assistance of Belgian architect, Luc Zeghers, into an all-suite boutique hotel and restaurant in 1996, agrees the time had come for the restaurant and cellar at Ten Bompas to be refurbished and enlarged after conversations with his neighbour at his holiday home in Lagrasse, France, who happened to be Joanna Flatau, the highly acclaimed Polish artist living in Paris. A painting of Amy Winehouse by Flatau now enjoys pride of place at the Winehouse Restaurant at Ten Bompas.

Dominik Middlecamp and Andrew Scott Fleet are the innovative chefs at Winehouse, where the menu reflects a distinct French theme, complemented by top quality ingredients and fresh produce from the hotel’s vegetable garden.

Dominik was trained at the Culinary Schools of Cooking in Lubeck and Hannover before gaining practical experience in kitchens of luxury ocean cruisers such as Tui Cruiselines and Cunard Cruiselines, whilst Andrew sports a Diploma in Professional Cookery, City and Guides and has worked at award-winning restaurants at The Plettenberg, The Metropole and Salt.

Menus will change on a daily basis to ensure the freshest sourced ingredients are utilized to complement discerning palates favouring seasonal cuisine to enhance the delectable dishes designed by these creative kitchen alchemists.

Winehouse seats 50 diners indoors, 16 in the private dining room and an additional 30 on the terrace overlooking the tranquil garden and sparkling pool. The restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch Monday to Sunday, private breakfasts, lunches and dinners as well as cocktail parties, functions and events.

The sophisticated, clean design of Winehouse and its glass-fronted, double volume wine cellar overlooking the elegant swimming pool, offer sublime choices from the vine, amounting to thousands of bottles of South African vintages and a large collection of auction wines purchased annually at the Cape Winemakers Guild Auction in Stellenbosch.

Ten Bompas comprises 10 suites, each designed by a different interior decorator, a restaurant and two conference rooms, reflecting a contemporary-meets-Africa style.

By early 2014 the hotel will be launching the newly completed Space conference and events centre, designed by Enrico Daffonchio, comprising 2 spacious locations accommodating between 30 and 70 guests respectively.
