Sitting in on a discussion in which several groups wished to consolidate or amalgamate their efforts, the MICE Academy was a tad intrigued that the overall facilitator had not taken the time to find out each groups raison d’etre or in plain English their reason for existence in the first place.
Perhaps one of the greatest weaknesses within many aspects of the business sector and in particular the MICE industry is accepting hearsay comments rather than taking the time and effort to do actual research and investigations. We live in an age of so much research internet tools that there is limited excuse for not independently doing some of one’s own checking especially with industry knowledge in that particular sector.
Those that pursue their own research will be amazed at the difference from what they heard at a networking gathering in comparison to what are the actual facts.
Admittedly there are those that are skeptical of high-powered research findings undertaken at great expense by research experts. Many investors have burnt their fingers in believing the research findings where essentially the researchers were good at research techniques but had no feel for the real impact of their findings on that particular industry. Hence the word ‘research’ conjures up visions of disastrous outcomes by applying the findings as gospel.
Nevertheless plunging headlong into a wonderful concept of ‘let’s all work together’ may sound admirable but unless one appreciates the under-belly within all groups respectively – it’s just a lot of talk and very limited action.
